The World Health Organization has said that more and more strains of bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics. This is beyond frightening, and over the past century, we have taken antibiotics for granted, so much so in fact, that we have been overusing them to the point where it is time to find alternatives. I believe that one of those alternatives could very well be colloidal silver.
I am a huge fan of natural remedies. That’s not to say that I don’t believe in traditional medicine; of course, it is a necessary part of our lives. But I try to add as many natural remedies to life as I can, to avoid side effects from drugs, and to try to head off illness at the pass. Colloidal silver is one of my favourites, and I like to share everything I know about it.
What many people do not know is that silver is a very effective germ killer, both viral and bacterial, and its use for medical purposes dates back to the ancient Greeks. Prior to the invention and distribution of antibiotics in the 1930s and 40s, doctors routinely used silver to sterilize wounds during surgeries, as an elixir for age-related illnesses and pneumonia and as recent as the 1960s and 1970s, silver nitrate was put into the eyes of newborn babies to prevent eye infections contracted during the birth process. People also used to put silver coins in milk to keep it free of bacteria.
The formulations of colloidal silver today can be used to prevent colds and flu, sinus infections, sore throats, and as an anti-inflammatory agent. Dr. Josh Axe, a certified doctor of natural medicine, doctor of chiropractic and clinical nutritionist, provides a very simple breakdown of colloidal silver benefits and the mechanisms behind how and why it works here: 8 Proven Colloidal Silver Benefits and Uses.
Here’s some other ideas too:
- topically for burns, cuts and scrapes to kill bacteria and make things heal faster (it comes in a gel)
- colds, flu, bronchitis and coughs
- stomach problems like nausea, vomiting and diverticulitis (even just a bad stomach ache)
- ear infections
- food poisoning (I used it for salmonella once and it was gone in a few hours)
- sinus infections
- sore throat (you can gargle with it)
- sore teeth, teeth infections (you can buy it in toothpaste form)
The list is actually endless. I have been using colloidal silver for two years now. During cold and flu season, I take it orally to boost my immune system, and if I start to feel like I am coming down with a virus, I take 3 teaspoons 3 times daily for one or two days, and I have found that if I follow this regimen, I very rarely come down with a cold, and when I do, the symptoms are significantly lessened.
I also have to give a shout out for using colloidal silver for stomach ailments. I find that within an hour or two of taking one dose, my symptoms begin to subside. I also must say that my husband, who is extremely skeptical of natural remedies, has begun using colloidal silver regularly, because he has had the same experience.
The brand of colloidal silver I use is Silver Biotics. It is made by a company called American Biotech Labs. American Biotech has done many studies on the safe and effective use of colloidal silver, and I really value this brand, because of the way it’s made and the success I have had with it.
I think that it is important to get the advice of a nutritionist as far as dosage is concerned, and of course, if symptoms of any kind of infection worsen, it is important to seek the advice of a doctor, but overall, I am experiencing a significant benefit to using colloidal silver, and I think it is a valuable addition to anyone’s health arsenal.
Disclaimer: There is a very rare irreversible condition called argyria which can be caused by consuming too much silver. Argyria is not life threatening, and it only has one symptom – it is when skin turns blue in colour. I have used colloidal silver for a number of years and have not experienced this, but it is important to note that some people are prone to developing this condition in rare incidences.
